Description
Szeged is the sunniest city in Hungary and was rebuilt almost entirely after the Tisza flood of 1879 swept away all but a few hundred houses, which gave it a single coherent plan of boulevards and art nouveau facades unlike anywhere else in the country. European cities that helped fund the rebuilding have avenues named after them. The Votive Church with its twin towers stands on a square used for a summer open-air theatre festival. Szeged paprika and fish soup are the local specialities, and the university keeps the centre young. The plan makes the whole centre unusually easy to walk.
