Description
Tokaj gave its name to the sweet wine that Louis the Fourteenth called the wine of kings and the king of wines, and its slopes were the first vineyard region anywhere to be classified, in 1737. The whole landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Autumn fog off the Bodrog and Tisza rivers encourages the noble rot that concentrates the grapes for Aszú, which is measured in puttonyos and aged in cellars cut deep into volcanic rock and furred with black mould. The town sits below a hill at the meeting of the two rivers. Cellar visits are booked ahead and include a tasting.
