Short description of Eger
Eger (Erlau) is a baroque town in the northern hills best known for two things, a siege and a wine. In 1552 a garrison of two thousand held the castle against an Ottoman army many times its size, a defence that became the founding story of Hungarian resistance. The minaret left from the later occupation is the northernmost in Europe. Bull's Blood, the dark blend named after that siege, is poured in the cellars of the Valley of the Beautiful Women outside town, where dozens of doors open straight into the tuff. The cellars lie a twenty minute walk from the square.
