Balatonfüred, Hungary

Balatonfüred

Hungary · Lake Balaton · 110 m

Description

Balatonfüred is the oldest resort on Lake Balaton and the centre of its northern shore, a spa town of plane-shaded promenades, a yacht harbour and villas built when the Hungarian gentry took the waters here. Carbonated springs still run from a pavilion on the main square. The lake is the largest in central Europe and shallow enough to warm through by June, which fills the whole shore in summer. Tihany, a peninsula of lavender fields and an abbey with two towers above the water, lies a few kilometres west. Out of season the shore empties completely and most places close.
