Description
Debrecen is the second city of Hungary and the historic centre of Hungarian Protestantism, known as the Calvinist Rome for the yellow Great Reformed Church that dominates its main square and twice served as the seat of a revolutionary parliament. The Déri Museum holds Munkácsy's three vast Christ paintings in a room built for them. North of the centre the Great Forest is an old oak stand with a thermal bath complex and the university inside it. Debrecen is the gateway to the Hortobágy puszta. The city is a base rather than a destination, and the plain begins at its edge.
