Description
Pécs (Fünfkirchen) lies under the Mecsek hills in the warm south and carries two thousand years of layers in one small centre. The early Christian burial chambers beneath the cathedral square are painted with biblical scenes and hold UNESCO World Heritage status. On the main square stands the mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim, converted to a Catholic church but still showing its mihrab and dome, the largest Ottoman building left in Hungary. Zsolnay ceramics were made here, and their iridescent eosin glaze covers roofs across the country. The centre is small enough that all of it lies within one walk.
