Dhigurah

Dhigurah (ދިގުރަށް) is a long, narrow island in South Ari Atoll, stretching for around three kilometres from its village in the north to an empty beach and sandbank in the south. Its name means long island, and its palm forest, beaches and reefs give it a tranquil, natural character.

The island lies within the South Ari Marine Protected Area, one of the best places in the world to snorkel with whale sharks, which are present along the outer reef throughout the year. Manta rays gather at nearby cleaning stations, turtles graze on the reef flats, and the house reef drop off is close enough to snorkel from the shore. Night dives with nurse sharks are also possible. On land, a path runs through the palm forest along the spine of the island, leading from the village with its guesthouses and mosque to the quiet beaches and the sandbank at the southern tip. Despite its popularity, Dhigurah keeps a relaxed island rhythm, and neighbouring local islands such as Dhangethi can be visited by boat.

Dhigurah is reached from Malé by speedboat, or by domestic flight to nearby Maamigili and a short boat ride. Several days suit a stay with whale shark trips and diving. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the dry season from December to April brings the calmest seas. Modest dress is expected in the village, and alcohol is not sold.
