Short description of Lhaviyani Atoll
Lhaviyani Atoll (ޅާވިޔަނި), also known as Faadhippolhu, lies north of the Kaafu atolls and is known for its rich reefs, strong channels and a mix of resort islands and inhabited islands. Long sandbanks stretch across its turquoise lagoon, and the atoll can be reached from Malé by seaplane or by domestic flight and boat.
Beneath the surface, the atoll is a favourite with divers. Fast channel drifts bring encounters with grey reef sharks and eagle rays, and the Fushivaru Thila cleaning station attracts manta rays in season. At the Shipyard, two coral covered wrecks rise from the reef, and turtles are common on the outer reefs. Lagoon coral gardens and house reefs offer easy snorkelling.
Lhaviyani's resort islands range from family friendly islands with long sandbanks to quieter adult islands with overwater villas and undersea dining. The atoll also has a strong local identity. Naifaru, the atoll capital, is a busy island of fishermen and traders where bodu beru drumming is still performed, and Felivaru is home to a fish cannery that has long shaped the region's economy.
A seaplane flight from Malé offers spectacular views over the atolls. Several days to a week suit a resort stay with diving. The dry season from December to April brings the calmest seas and best visibility, while manta and plankton activity varies through the year.
