Short description of Noonu Atoll
Noonu Atoll (ނޫނު) lies north of Malé and forms the southern part of the Miladhunmadulu chain. Its lagoons, coral reefs and scattered islands are home to some of the most exclusive resorts in the Maldives, alongside quiet inhabited islands.
The atoll is known for secluded luxury, with overwater villas, private islands and resorts designed around privacy and design. Velaa Private Island and Cheval Blanc Randheli are among its best known addresses. Most guests arrive by seaplane, enjoying sweeping views of reefs and lagoons, or by domestic flight to the airport at Maafaru followed by a short boat ride.
Below the water, Noonu offers excellent diving. Thilas such as Orimas Thila and Christmas Tree Rock attract grey reef sharks, schools of fusiliers and jacks, and turtles and rays are common on the reefs. Visibility is often very good, and lagoon coral gardens, sandbanks and uninhabited islands invite snorkelling and picnics. The atoll capital Manadhoo and local islands such as Kudafari and Foddhoo show everyday island life.
Several days to a week suit a resort stay. The dry season from December to April brings calm, clear water and sunny days, while the southwest monsoon from May to November brings more wind and rain. On inhabited islands, modest dress is expected and alcohol is not sold.
