Description
Sopron (Ödenburg) sits in a pocket of Hungarian territory surrounded on three sides by Austria and voted to stay Hungarian in a 1921 plebiscite, which earned it the title of the most loyal town. Its horseshoe-shaped old town is built on Roman foundations and holds a Gothic fire tower, a synagogue of the fourteenth century and a dense run of medieval and baroque houses. Vineyards come right up to the streets, and the Kékfrankos grown here is among the best red wine in the country. Lake Fertő lies just north. Vienna is closer than Budapest and reachable in under an hour.
