Description
Thaa (ތާ), traditionally known as “Kolhumadulu”, is one of the southern atolls of the Maldives and comprises thirteen inhabited islands. The region combines a largely traditional island culture with a rich pre Islamic heritage. On Kinbidhoo, the ruins of a large Buddhist stupa bear witness to this past, while Kanimeedhoo preserves further Buddhist remains alongside historic mosques, wells and bathing pools. Veymandoo serves as the administrative center, Thimarafushi is home to an airport, and Vilufushi was rebuilt on reclaimed land after being devastated by the 2004 tsunami. With its coral reefs, broad lagoons and historic sites, Thaa is among the Maldives' most culturally significant atolls.
