Description
Tetovo lies under the Šar mountains in the northwest, a mostly Albanian speaking town whose one famous building is unlike anything else in the region. The Painted Mosque, finished in 1438 and redone in 1833, is covered inside and out in painted panels of flowers, landscapes and geometric patterns, an unusual decision in a tradition that generally avoids representation. A dervish lodge of the eighteenth century survives nearby with its wooden pavilions and garden. The Šar range behind holds the country's main ski area at Popova Šapka.
