Description
Stobi is the largest archaeological site in North Macedonia, laid out where the Crna Reka joins the Vardar on the road that ran from the Danube to the Aegean. Philip V annexed it to Macedonia and it grew into the capital of the province of Macedonia Salutaris, then emptied out in the sixth century after a run of earthquakes. The Episcopal Basilica is the earliest evidence of Christianity in the country, and its baptistery keeps a mosaic floor with a peacock. A theatre cut into the slope, paved streets and the mosaics of the town houses are all uncovered.
