Matka Canyon
North Macedonia · Skopje · 350 m
Description
Matka is a gorge on the Treska half an hour from Skopje, dammed in 1938 into a narrow green reservoir with cliffs rising straight from the water on both sides. A footpath cut into the rock runs along one bank past two small medieval monasteries to a boat landing. Vrelo cave opens at the waterline and is among the deepest underwater caves in Europe, with the bottom still not reached. Kayaks and small boats are the usual way through. The canyon is the standard half day out from the capital.
