Description
Prilep sits on the Pelagonian plain under a landscape of enormous rounded granite boulders that stand piled on the hills like something poured rather than built. Marko's Towers, a ruined fortress associated with a fourteenth century king who entered Balkan folk song, sit among them above the town. The monastery of Treskavec is reached by a rough track twelve kilometres up. Prilep grows most of the country's tobacco and the smell of it hangs over the drying sheds through late summer.
