Description
Bitola is the second city of North Macedonia and was the diplomatic seat of Ottoman Rumelia, which earned it the nickname city of the consuls and left a main street of nineteenth century townhouses unlike anything else in the country. Širok Sokak is a kilometre of neoclassical facades and cafés where the whole town walks in the evening. On the edge of town lie the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by Philip II of Macedon, whose late Roman basilicas keep some of the finest floor mosaics in the Balkans.
