Description
Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia and where almost every visitor arrives, a city rebuilt twice over, once after an earthquake levelled it in 1963 and again in the twenty tens when a government programme filled the centre with neoclassical facades and several hundred statues. The result divides opinion sharply. Across the Vardar the Ottoman Old Bazaar survived both and is the largest in the Balkans outside Istanbul, a quarter of mosques, hans and coppersmiths reached over a stone bridge of the fifteenth century.
