Description
Mavrovo is the largest national park in North Macedonia, a block of mountain and beech forest in the west running up to the Albanian border. Its artificial lake holds the country's most photographed ruin, a half submerged church that surfaces or floods depending on the water level. The Bigorski monastery in the gorge below holds an iconostasis of the eighteen thirties carved so deeply that figures stand almost free of the wood. Balkan lynx survive here in very small numbers. The ski resort at Mavrovo is the country's largest.
