Description
Tasiilaq is the largest town in East Greenland and the centre of a coast whose people were cut off from the rest of the island until late in the nineteenth century. Bright houses rise around King Oscar's Harbour, ringed by peaks that drop straight into the sea. Behind the town the Valley of Flowers opens into alpine terrain that draws hikers, ski mountaineers and climbers to the Schweizerland range. The Ammassalik region keeps a distinct language and a strong tradition of tupilak carving and drum dancing. Boats pick their way through drift ice to the glacier fronts of Sermilik fjord.
