Description
Qeqertarsuaq is the only town on Disko Island and looks nothing like the rest of Greenland. The island is built of dark basalt rather than ancient granite, so its coast rises in flat-topped mountains cut by waterfalls, and hot springs run in the valleys behind town. A wooden octagonal church known as the “Lord's Inkpot” stands above the harbour, and the Arctic Station has studied this shore since the nineteenth century. Whales gather in the strait, hikers cross the Blaesedalen valley toward the glaciers of the interior, and basalt columns line the black beaches.
