Description
Ilulissat is the best known destination in Greenland and takes its name, meaning icebergs, from the giants that drift past its harbour. The Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fed by the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, one of the fastest and most productive on earth. Wooden boardwalks lead from town over the rock to the mouth of the fjord, where the ice packs into a jam of towers and tables. Boats sail among the bergs at midnight in summer, dog teams work the frozen bay in winter, and humpback whales feed in Disko Bay.
