Description
Ittoqqortoormiit is among the most remote inhabited places on earth, a cluster of a few hundred people on the coast of East Greenland with no neighbouring town for hundreds of kilometres. It guards the entrance to Scoresby Sund, the largest and deepest fjord system in the world, whose arms run inland past sheer walls, tabular icebergs and the basalt cliffs of Milne Land. Northeast Greenland National Park, the largest protected area anywhere, begins just to the north. Polar bears, muskoxen and narwhals move through the region, and hunting and dog teams still carry the local economy.
