Short description of Aleppo
Aleppo (حلب) was for centuries the great trading city between the Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, and its citadel on a natural mound is among the largest and oldest castles in the world. The souks below it are the longest covered market anywhere, kilometres of vaulted lanes that are being repaired and reopened section by section after the war. The Great Umayyad Mosque beside them is under reconstruction. The Christian quarter of Jdeydeh keeps stone courtyard houses, and the city's kitchen, its kebabs, its pistachio sweets and its olive oil soap, is the most respected in the country.
