Short description of Apamea
Apamea (أفاميا) is a Hellenistic and Roman city on a plateau above the Orontes, and its great colonnaded street runs for nearly two kilometres, the longest that survives anywhere. Hundreds of columns stand again along it, many with spiral fluting found on few other sites, and side streets, baths, a theatre and a cathedral spread out to either side. The valley below is farmland and the setting is empty and wide. In the village of Qalaat al-Mudiq a Crusader and Ottoman citadel crowns the hill, and a khan at its foot holds the mosaic museum.
