Short description of Palmyra
Palmyra (تدمر) was the caravan city of the Syrian desert, rich on the trade between Rome and the east and ruled for a time by queen Zenobia. Its Great Colonnade still runs across the oasis for more than a kilometre, with the theatre, the agora and the camp of Diocletian around it, and tower tombs stand in the Valley of the Tombs on the ridge. Militants dynamited the temples of Bel and Baalshamin and much of the monumental arch, so those are ruins of ruins now. The Arab castle above the site is the place to watch the palms and columns turn gold at sunset.
