Tanna, Vanuatu

Tanna

Vanuatu · Tafea · 30 m

Description

Tanna lies in the far south of Vanuatu, forty minutes by air from the capital, and it holds the reason most people fly beyond Efate at all. Mount Yasur has been erupting continuously for centuries and a road runs to the crater rim, so visitors stand at dusk a hundred metres above a vent that throws lava into the air every few minutes. The rest of the island is just as unusual, with kastom villages in the highlands that never took up Christianity, the John Frum movement at Sulphur Bay, hot springs on the ash plain and a coast of black sand and coral bays.
