Description
Malekula is the second largest island in Vanuatu and the most linguistically dense place in the country, with more than thirty languages still spoken across it. Its interior was home to the Big Nambas and Small Nambas, groups whose ceremonial dress, ritual sites and cannibal history make the island the main destination for anyone travelling for culture rather than beaches. Lakatoro is the small administrative town on the east coast. Offshore, Wala and Uripiv have clear reef water and Wala takes cruise calls, while the Maskelyne Islands in the south are a scatter of low sandy islets reached by outrigger.
