Description
Erromango was stripped of its sandalwood in the middle of the nineteenth century and of most of its people by the diseases the traders brought, and the missionary John Williams was killed on the beach at Dillon's Bay in 1839 within minutes of landing. What the traders could not reach is still standing inland, a reserve of kauri trees over a thousand years old and forty metres tall, on a guided walk up from the bay. The Cave of Skulls above the village holds the remains of chiefs. Around two thousand people live on an island that once held many times that.
