Description
Gaua is a volcano whose crater holds the largest lake in Vanuatu, and the lake in turn holds a still active cone. Lake Letas fills most of the caldera and is crossed by dugout canoe, Mount Garet steams on its far shore, and the water that leaves the crater falls off the rim as the Siri waterfall, which is claimed as the tallest in the South Pacific. Reaching any of it means a guided walk of several hours up through rainforest. The women of Gaua are the source of the water music now performed across the country.
