Description
Spiš Castle (Spišský hrad) is one of the largest castle complexes in central Europe, a ruin of white limestone walls covering four hectares on a travertine hill that rises alone from the plain and can be seen from thirty kilometres away. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the church at Žehra and the Spiš Chapter. Building began in the twelfth century and continued in stages until fire gutted it in 1780. The upper courtyard, the round Romanesque keep and the long empty walls are open, and the view runs to the Tatras. The walk up from the car park takes twenty minutes.
