Description
Bojnice holds the most visited castle in Slovakia and the one that looks least like the rest, a romantic reconstruction of the eighteen nineties in the style of the Loire chateaux, with steep slate roofs, slender turrets and a moat, built by Count Pálffy on the shell of a medieval fortress. Inside are a gilded ceiling copied from Venice, a chapel holding the count's sarcophagus and a cave underneath the rock. A lime tree in the grounds is said to be seven hundred years old. Slovakia's oldest zoo adjoins the park. The castle fills a half day and is the busiest sight in the country.
