Description
The High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) are the smallest alpine range in the world, a wall of granite peaks barely twenty six kilometres long that rises to Gerlachovský štít at two thousand six hundred and fifty five metres. Everything about them is compressed, so a walk from spruce forest to bare rock takes a morning. Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica sit along a mountain railway at the foot of the wall. Cable cars run to Lomnický štít and Skalnaté pleso, and the high trails are closed each winter for avalanche danger. Trails above the treeline are officially closed from November to mid June.
