Short description of Levoča
Levoča is a walled Saxon town on the Spiš plateau and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, laid out around one of the largest medieval squares in central Europe with the town hall standing free in the middle of it. The church of Saint James holds the tallest Gothic wooden altar in the world, eighteen and a half metres of carved and gilded limewood cut by Master Paul of Levoča around 1517. A cage of shame stands on the square. In July a pilgrimage brings hundreds of thousands to the hill above the town. Everything of interest stands on or beside the square.
