Description
Nzulezo is a village of about five hundred people built entirely on stilts over Lake Tadane in the far southwest, reached by an hour of paddling through a raffia swamp from the village of Beyin. Everything stands on one raised walkway of hardwood planks, the houses, the school, the church and the bar, and the whole structure is rebuilt piece by piece as the wood rots. The founding story has the villagers led here from Mali by a snail. It sits on the UNESCO tentative list and receives a few thousand visitors a year.
