Description
Akosombo is the dam town on the Volta, built in the early nineteen sixties to power the aluminium smelter at Tema and, in doing so, creating Lake Volta, which at eight and a half thousand square kilometres is the largest reservoir in the world by surface area. Around eighty thousand people were resettled to make room for it. The town itself is a planned company settlement on the hills above the wall, and the reason to come is the water, either on the Dodi Princess day cruise or from a hotel terrace looking down the gorge.
