Description
Kumasi is the capital of the Ashanti and the seat of the Asantehene, whose kingdom fought four wars against the British and whose golden stool is still held to hold the soul of the nation. The Manhyia Palace museum, in the residence the British built for the returning exiled king in 1925, is where that history is told from the Ashanti side. Kejetia is the largest market in West Africa, tens of thousands of stalls under a hill of rusted roofs, and the kente weaving villages of Bonwire and Adanwomase are half an hour out.
