Description
Kingstown is the capital of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and a working port rather than a resort town, a tight grid of stone arcades under the hills where the ferries for every island in the chain leave from one jetty. The Botanic Gardens above town were founded in 1765 and are the oldest in the western hemisphere, with a breadfruit tree grown from the material Captain Bligh finally delivered in 1793 after the first attempt ended in the mutiny. Fort Charlotte on the ridge has its guns pointed inland, at the Kalinago rather than the sea.
