Short description of Katse Dam
Katse is a double curvature arch wall a hundred and eighty five metres high, thrown across a gorge in the central highlands to send water under the mountains to Johannesburg. It is the only reason the good tarred roads exist up here in the highlands at all. Guided tours go down inside the wall from the visitor centre twice a day, and the botanical garden beside it grows the spiral aloe and the rest of the alpine flora that the reservoir displaced. The approach road over the Mafika Lisiu pass climbs to well above three thousand metres.
