Description
Hope Town sits on Elbow Cay in the Abacos and is the prettiest of the loyalist settlements, founded by families who left the American colonies after the revolution and kept a New England building style that looks out of place this far south. Clapboard cottages in sherbet colours line lanes too narrow for cars, and golf carts do the work instead. The candy striped lighthouse across the harbour is one of the last kerosene lights in the world still wound by hand. Hurricane Dorian struck the Abacos in 2019 and rebuilding has been slow.
