Gjirokastra

Gjirokastra (Gjirokastër) is a historic city in southern Albania and a remarkable center of history, architecture, and culture. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is known for its well-preserved Ottoman stone houses with distinctive stone roofs, its steep cobblestone streets, and the imposing Castle of Gjirokastra rising above the old town. Gjirokastra combines traditional Albanian heritage with Ottoman influences, remarkable architecture, and the dramatic mountain landscape of the Drino Valley. One or two nights allow the steep quarters to be explored without rushing. Polished stone can be slippery, especially after rain, and the climb between bazaar, houses and fortress is substantial. Check individual house-museum hours and leave time for regional dishes rather than treating the old town as a quick photo stop.
