Butrint National Park

Butrint is an archaeological World Heritage Site within the wider national park in southern Albania. Its ruins preserve evidence of a Greek settlement, Roman urban life, early Christianity and later Byzantine and Venetian activity. A theatre, fortifications and religious buildings sit among woodland and waterways, making the relationship between the ancient city and its changing environment an essential part of a visit.

The theatre, city walls, basilica and Venetian-era fortifications reveal how successive communities adapted the site. Water and woodland are part of the story rather than a backdrop: changing wetlands influenced settlement and later abandonment. Set aside at least a half day, with more time for interpretation and the surrounding landscape. Paths include roots, steps and uneven ancient stone, and summer heat can be considerable. Some mosaics are kept covered for conservation, so do not assume every feature will be visible; check current access and follow site rules.
