Short description of Varela
Varela has the best beach on the mainland and is protected from everything by the track that leads to it, fifty kilometres of deep sand and holes that takes half a day and destroys vehicles. What waits at the end is a long white shore with palms leaning over it and almost nobody on it. A handful of very simple places rent out rooms. The Senegalese border runs just north through the bush and the Casamance beaches continue on the far side. In the rains the track becomes genuinely impassable and the village is cut off.
