Short description of Bissau
Bissau is a low port capital of peeling Portuguese facades and wide streets under mango trees, a city that has been through more coups than almost anywhere and wears the evidence openly. The old quarter around the square keeps its colonial buildings in various stages of collapse, some of them shored up and some still open to the sky. Everything moves through the port, where the ferries to the islands load from a quay that is also a memorial to a dockers' massacre. The big central market is loud and very cheap. Carnival here is the best in the whole of West Africa.
