Short description of Bolama

Bolama was the capital of Portuguese Guinea for seventy years and was then abandoned for the mainland, which left an entire colonial town to the forest. Wide avenues run between roofless villas, a governor's palace, a hospital and a printing works, all of them open to the sky and full of trees. A few hundred people live among the ruins and keep goats in the old squares. The island itself is reached only by boat across the water from the mainland. Almost nothing here has been restored and there is very little to stay in.
