Short description of Bafatá
Bafatá is the old river port of the interior, built by the Portuguese where the Geba is still navigable and then left behind when the trade moved on, so its colonial quarter now stands mostly empty above the water. It is the birthplace of the man who led the independence war, and the house he was born in is kept as a small museum. The market is the busiest thing in town. Downstream the Corubal drops over a rock sill in a run of rapids that carry real water after the rains. Cashew country surrounds it.
