Description
Uyuni is a small town in southwestern Bolivia and the main gateway to the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat. Set on the windswept Altiplano, the town is geared toward tourism, with numerous tour agencies, hotels, and restaurants serving visitors to the region. One of its few attractions is the Train Cemetery, where historic steam locomotives rust beneath the open sky, creating one of Bolivia's most iconic photography spots. Most visitors come to Uyuni to join 4x4 expeditions that explore not only the vast salt flats but also the colorful lagoons, volcanoes, and high-altitude deserts of the surrounding Altiplano. At an elevation of around 3,670 meters (12,040 ft), Uyuni experiences a dry climate, intense sunshine, and cold nights throughout the year, making it primarily a practical base for exploring the extraordinary landscapes of southwestern Bolivia.
