Sajama National Park
Bolivia · Altiplano · 4200 m
Description
Sajama National Park (Parque Nacional Sajama) is Bolivia's oldest protected area and preserves Nevado Sajama, the country's highest mountain at 6,542 metres (21,463 ft). This remote Altiplano landscape is characterized by snow-capped volcanoes, vast grasslands, high-altitude wetlands, and the world's highest-growing queñua forests. The park is home to vicuñas, vizcachas, Andean condors, and many other species specially adapted to life at extreme elevations. Natural hot springs, geysers, and the striking Payachatas volcanoes make Sajama one of the most spectacular natural destinations in the Bolivian Andes. The small village of Sajama serves as the main gateway for hiking, mountaineering, and wildlife watching in one of South America's most pristine high-mountain regions.
