Description
Utuado lies in the Cordillera Central among steep karst hills and is the centre of the mountain interior, a part of Puerto Rico most visitors never reach. The Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park just outside town holds ten stone lined ball courts laid out by the Taíno around eleven hundred years ago, the most important pre-Columbian site on the island. Two reservoirs fill the valleys below, and a free public boat crosses Lago Dos Bocas to restaurants that have no road. Coffee grows on the slopes and roadside lechoneras roast whole pork over charcoal at weekends.
