Description
Arecibo stands on the north coast at the edge of the karst belt, a landscape of limestone haystack hills and sinkholes that runs across the whole width of the island. One of those sinkholes held the Arecibo Observatory, whose three hundred metre dish was the largest single radio telescope in the world until its platform came down in 2020. The telescope was not rebuilt, and the site keeps a smaller scientific presence in the same sinkhole. Cliff caves along the coast hold Taíno petroglyphs, and a natural window in the rock above the Río Grande valley looks out over the karst.
