Description
The Usambara Mountains are a lush highland region in northeastern Tanzania and part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, one of Africa’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Known as “Africa’s Galapagos”, they are home to numerous endemic plants, rare birds, chameleons, and unique mountain ecosystems. Lushoto, the historic center of the West Usambara Mountains and formerly known as the German colonial settlement of Wilhelmstal, is today the gateway to trails through terraced fields, tea plantations, misty forests, and traditional villages. With their cool climate, dramatic landscapes, and rich cultural diversity, the Usambara Mountains are among Tanzania’s most rewarding destinations for hiking and nature experiences.
